Georgia DB Commings charged with battery

(Associated Press) - Georgia defensive back Sanders Commings was arrested Saturday on simple battery and domestic violence charges after allegedly hitting his girlfriend in the face during a dispute early Saturday morning.

According to UGA police chief Jimmy Williamson, Commings and his girlfriend were involved in an altercation at the corner of Jackson and Broad streets in downtown Athens at about 1 a.m. ET, and witnesses flagged down UGA police officers soon thereafter. "After conducting interviews, it was determined that Sanders Commings and his girlfriend, who was with these people that we now were talking to, had been in an altercation of some sort -- basically where there was an argument," Williamson said. "The witnesses tried to intervene. At that time, he reached around one of the witnesses and struck her."

Williamson said UGA police officers obtained a warrant from a magistrate judge at about 7 a.m. ET and arrested Commings at his apartment afterward. The rising senior will remain in jail until a judge arrives for a bond hearing, which means it could be Sunday before he is released. Williamson said judges typically hear bond cases at the jail each morning and that the judge will set Commings' bond amount at the hearing. "What happens is in domestic violence, they're mandated to see a judge before they get a bond," Williamson said. "There will be a cash bond set, but in domestic violence, the judge talks to the person and also puts a number of restrictions on there about no contact with the victim and things like that."

Commings recently decided to return to Georgia for his senior season, passing up an opportunity to enter the NFL draft. He started all 14 games and was fourth on the team with 55 tackles last season.
