Berglund's release came Friday, the same day he was scheduled to appear before the student-athlete appeals board, which would have determined whether his transfer request was fair. Berglund told The Associated Press in a phone interview that he sent a written request to school administrators in late December asking for permission to speak to other universities, but the request was denied. Berglund said no reason was given.

Coach Charlie Weis said in a statement Friday that Berglund was dismissed after he failed to show up for a mandatory team meeting. Weis said Berglund never spoke to him about being released.
