Davies Named WCC Player of the Week Mon, 06 Feb 2012 20:18:42 +0000 <p>SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- BYU junior forward <a href="/athlete/m-basketball/brandon-davies">Brandon Davies</a> is the West Coast Conference Player of the Week after leading the Cougars to wins over No. 24 Gonzaga and Portland. He averaged 16.5 points, nine rebounds and 4.5 steals per game, while shooting 56 percent from the field. Against Gonzaga Davies posted 15 points on 7 of 12 shooting, adding five rebounds. Today was the 27th meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Connecticut. The Huskies have a 17-10 advantage in the series, but the Irish have won four of the last five meetings.
This was Notre Dame's second straight win at Connecticut. The Irish topped the Huskies, 70-67, last season in Storrs (March 5, 2011). Notre Dame is 3-10 all-time at Connecticut, including a 2-8 mark inside the XL Center. Today's win snapped a six-game losing streak inside the XL Center.
"I couldn't be more proud of this group and what we're becoming, I hope. The run we're on right now to beat a really good team here. I think we didn't win any of the loose ball or rebounding battles in South Bend (back on Jan. 14 versus Connecticut) and that's why they kind of pushed us around. We were much more physical today and held our own. Again, I think we defended well. But the key is with us, we really controlled the tempo and that takes its toll on a team I think over 40 minutes when the offensive rhythm just isn't quite there."

Grant had 11 points and Scott Martin added 10 points for Notre Dame (14-8, 6-3 BIG EAST), who controlled the tempo throughout. The loss spoiled the return of freshman guard Ryan Boatright for Connecticut (14-6, 4-4) and, who missed the last three games amid an NCAA investigation into his eligibility.
